What makes an SBS shingle different?
SBS (styrene-butadiene-styrene) and other polymer-modified shingles use rubberizing polymers blended into the asphalt formulation, improving flexibility compared with conventional asphalt shingles. This is a legitimate, distinct shingle category — not the same thing as a composite or rubber roofing product, and not a typo for standard asphalt.
Manufacturer research backs this up directly: Malarkey describes its NEX technology as a proprietary SBS polymer-modified asphalt used across its shingle range, and CertainTeed markets its ClimateFlex shingles as polymer-modified asphalt built around the same rubberizing-polymer concept.
Not every SBS shingle carries the same impact rating, and we won't tell you a specific product is Class 4 unless that's the exact confirmed product. What we can do is walk through which manufacturer's polymer-modified line fits your home and budget during the estimate.
